A 23-year-old man is in an induced coma Hawke's Bay Hospital after an assault in Napier this morning.
The assault happened just after 10am in the Napier suburb of Maraenui.
Inspector Kevin Kalff told NZPA that there were a number of people involved in the assault as well as a number of witnesses but so far there had been very little co-operation with police inquiries.
It was not clear whether the man, who sustained head injuries, and his attackers knew each other.
Police inquiries were continuing.
