A man is dead after being struck by two heavy trucks on a state highway in Waikato this morning.
Police said officers sealed off State Highway 39 at the southern end of Pirongia after being called to the fatality about 2.30am.
It appeared the man had been struck by two trucks heading north through Pirongia, police said.
His identity is yet to be established.
Police shift inspector Cornell Klussein said the man was walking on the state highway.
"It was a truck versus a pedestrian, or someone on the road," he said.
Diversions are in place in Pirongia to steer southbound traffic off State Highway 39 into Beechey St, towards Te Awamutu.
Northbound drivers are being diverted away from State Highway 39 at Otorohanga.
An inquiry was under way to determine the identity of the dead man and the cause of his death, police said.
Victim support was being offered to the two truck drivers.
The Attorney-General has challenged a decision allowing all three parents to be named.
