A 19-year-old man was critically injured in what is thought to be a hit-and-run incident in Paengaroa last night.
The incident occurred on Te Tumu Rd, police said.
St John spokeswoman Victoria Hawkins said three ambulances attended just after 9.30pm on Saturday.
"It does appear he was hit by a car," she said.
"We had a couple of callers calling in. One said he had been hit by a car and another one said they had just come across him lying unconscious on the road."
Western Bay of Plenty Police said officers were seeking information in relation to the incident.
The man was struck by a grey-black utility vehicle heading east on Te Tumu Rd just after 9pm, police said.
The vehicle was described as a "flat deck" with a drum on the tray.
Police have yet to locate and speak to the driver.
The 19-year-old man is in Waikato Hospital with serious injuries but is stable, police said.
Police would like to speak to any witnesses who saw the incident or have any information, as well as the driver of the utility. Contact police on (07) 577 4300 or call anonymous hotline Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
