Man faces murder charge after baby dies of injuries

A West Coast man broke down in tears as he was accused of the murder of a baby.

The 10-month-old boy - from Hokitika - was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital last night with serious injuries. He died shortly before midday.

A 30-year-old man is facing one charge of murder in relation to the incident.

He appeared by video link in court - supported in court by his mother and sister.

The man repeatedly wept, turning away from the camera.

An application for bail was denied - but his lawyer has indicated he'll be fighting the charge.
