Man dies in St Lukes train collision

A man is dead after being hit by a train in Auckland this morning.

Emergency services were called to the New North Road overbridge near the Morningside Station about 8.15am, following a report of a train vs pedestrian, a Fire Service spokesperson said.

Police said a man was struck by a train between Baldwin Ave Station and Morningside Station.

Veolia spokesperson Stephanie Morrison said the western line was closed from Morningside to Avondale and police were investigating the crash.

Rail buses would run between the two stops, although passengers coming from the west were advised to get off at New Lynn where there were more bus services.

Train tickets would also be accepted on Go West and Richie buses.

Ms Morrison said the train was a passenger service, and there would be counselling available to the driver.

Police said the line should re-open about 11am.

Twitter user Matthew Allen said there were "lots of disgruntled, late, train riders waiting in Morningside, hailing the busses wanting to go west".

The death has been referred to the coroner.
