Man dies as dump truck crashes down bank in Marlborough Sounds

One person has died after a dump truck careered off a bank in Marlborough.

The accident happened just before 12.30pm on Kenepuru Rd in Portage.

The Police Serious Crash Unit and CIB are en route to the scene.

Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter pilot Tim Douglas-Clifford said a dump truck rolled off the road and down a three-metre bank.

The truck landed upside down on its roof.

Douglas-Clifford did not see the driver but understood he was still in the cab when emergency services arrived.

He couldn't say whether the man was already dead when rescuers arrived.

Firefighters and police were also on the scene.
