The crash happened near the Oyster Factory on Bluff Road between Bluff and Invercargill, about 7.20am, Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said.
The car, with two people inside, was travelling south towards Bluff when it appearedto hit the back of a truck and trailer unit, which was travelling in the same direction.
Mr Brown said the crash happened near roadworks just outside the northern boundary of Bluff, Mr Brown said.
The driver of the car was taken to Southland Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, while the truck driver was shaken but uninjured and was treated at the scene by ambulance staff, Mr Brown said.
