Man dies after being hit by train

A man was killed early yesterday when he was hit by a train while sitting on the edge of a platform at Oamaru railway station.

The 28-year-old local man had gone to the station to eat a pizza, said Sergeant Wayne Brew of Oamaru police.

"It appeared the man fell asleep and was hit by the northbound freight train about 1.40am," Mr Brew told the Oamaru Mail.

Police have referred the matter to the coroner.
