A man has died after being hit by a train in Canterbury.

The incident occurred about 11pm on Wednesday south of Kaiapoi, police said.

It was reported the man, in his late 20s, was struck by a train on the train tracks.

He was found dead at the scene.

Police are conducting a scene examination and the matter will be reported to the coroner.
