Mr Money said the man died at the scene from his injuries, and a witness said he saw police, fire and St John vehicles at the property about 9am.
Part of a long driveway to the house was cordoned off as police and WorkSafe NZ investigated the scene.
A spokesperson said WorkSafe was advised of this incident and initial inquiries were made.
"Following these inquiries, it was determined that the incident did not occur as a result of work, and therefore WorkSafe will not be investigating."
A neighbour said the man was passionate about motorsports and had several cars and a boat.
"He had lived next door for 40 or 50 years, but he was in the process of packing up and clearing his stuff out to move," she said.
She said he also had two cats that he was very fond of.
A friend of the man's said he was in shock.
He said the man had recently sold his house and bought a property in Kawerau - and was planning to move there.
