Man dies after attack by stag in Southland

A man has died after a stag attacked him in Southland on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services were called to a rural Makarewa address about 6.10pm.

"Initial indications are that the man was attacked by a stag and suffered fatal injuries," a police spokeswoman said.

The stag was put down.

His death will be referred to the coroner.
