Man dead after shooting in Hamilton

A man died last night after being shot at close range during a fight between several males in the Hamilton suburb of Melville.

Emergency services were called to an address on Norrie St around 6.20pm.

A St John spokeswoman said the victim, in his 20s or 30s, was taken to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said late last night that he had died.

They said they had secured the scene of the shooting and were speaking to a number of people as part of their homicide investigation.

Victim Support and iwi liaison personnel were helping the victim's family.

Police advised residents of the Melville area to be diligent in securing their properties and vehicles and to immediately report any suspicious behaviour by calling 111.
