A man has died after his car crashed with a petrol tanker in Christchurch this morning.
Police said the vehicles collided at the intersection of Brougham and Selwyn Street, Addington, around 5am.
The driver, a man in his 40s, had to be cut from the vehicle by the Fire Service.
St John said the man was taken to Christchurch Hospital Emergency Department in a "very serious condition", with multiple serious injuries, including head and torso injuries, however he died in hospital.
Police said Brougham St will be closed for several hours between Barrington St and Antigua St and drivers are advised to use alternate routes and expect some delays if travelling through the area.
A number of power poles and traffic light standards have been damaged.
