A man has been rushed to hospital with critical injuries after his car slammed into a power pole in Huntly this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the single-vehicle crash on Te Ohaki Rd about 2pm.
Senior Sergeant Juliet Burgess of Waikato police said the male driver was flown ina critical condition to Waikato Hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Diversions were in place and motorists were being advised to avoid the area if possible. The road was likely to be closed for at least two hours.
"The Waikato serious crash unit has been called in to investigate the crash and traffic management staff are on site assisting with diversions," Ms Burgess said.
"While unable to comment further on what has occurred we are asking road users to drive with care and keep their speed down to ensure they get to their destinations safely."
The crash comes after five people lost their lives on New Zealand roads this weekend.
