A man desperate to evade police survived a four-storey plunge from a central Auckland apartment building on Saturday night.
While trying to shinny down a drainpipe, the 19-year-old lost his footing and fell from the Brooklyn Apartments in Eden Crescent. Wheelie bins cushioned his landing.
The man was taken to
hospital with moderate injuries, which are not considered to be life-threatening.
Police watched helplessly as the drama unfolded, after being called to a domestic dispute about 11 pm. When they arrived, the man climbed out the window of his girlfriend's apartment. He managed to descend about 2m before falling.
Other apartment dwellers said there was a strong smell of marijuana and loud voices before the man's fall.
The Police Complaints Authority is investigating the incident - standard procedure when police are involved, and someone is hurt.
