Man charged over Taita death

A Lower Hutt man has been charged with manslaughter after a Taita man died in a driveway near his home last month.

A homicide investigation was launched after Michael James Mulholland, 52, was found unconscious in a Farmer Crescent driveway by a friend on September 20.

Friends and emergency workers tried to revive him but he died at the scene.

Inquiry head Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson today said a 30-year-old man had been charged with manslaughter.

He appeared in Lower Hutt District today and was remanded in custody.

Police were speaking to a second man in connection with the homicide investigation.

Mr Thomson said the arrest followed extensive scene examinations and engagement with people in the Farmers Crescent area and the wider community.

Several houses on Farmers Crescent display signs of Mongrel Mob affiliation and police have confirmed to media that Mr Mulholland had connections with the gang.

Police last week said a number of people visited his home on the night he died.
