Man car surfs in empty car park in Franklin, Auckland; police condemn behaviour

Bystanders have captured video of a man standing on the roof of a moving car as it circles an empty car park in the Auckland district of Franklin.

It is prompting fresh warnings about dangerous “car surfing” stunts being shared on social media.

In the video, a maroon car can be seen slowly driving in circles around the empty car park with a man in a singlet and a blue bucket hat stand on top of the vehicle.

He can be seen shuffling around the car’s roof during the video, pretending to dance, surf and waving at the person filming the video all while smiling.

The video was posted on a neighbourhood Facebook group.

Inspector Danny Meade said Police found this behaviour concerning.

“Some of the commentary on the post equally expresses a disregard for safety.”

Meade said everything about the situation demonstrated poor judgment.

“Please, never take this kind of risk with a vehicle – even though it’s travelling at low speed, an injury sustained from falling could be significant.”

He said the drivers could also be held accountable, as this constitutes dangerous driving.
