Customs investigations manager, Maurice O'Brien said the find was a "great example" of customs' work extending beyond the border to apprehend those who attempt to import drugs.
"Methamphetamine is an incredibly harmful substance and customs places priority on keeping this harmful drug away from our communities," Mr O'Brien said.
The accused man appeared in the Dunedin District Court on Saturday morning charged with importing a class A drug and possession of a class A drug for supply.
Further charges may be laid.
The man has been remanded in custody and will reappear in the Dunedin District Court tomorrow.
The maximum sentence that can be imposed by the courts for importation of a class A drug or possession of a class A drug for supply is life imprisonment.
