Defence counsel Josh Lucas said Smith denied the charges and elected trial by jury.
He also faces charges of assaulting and resisting police in Westport. Smith asked for those charges to be transferred to Christchurch.
Judge Tony Couch remanded him in custody to a case review hearing on August 30.
A 36-year-old Woolston woman, alleged to have driven the man from the scene, has been charged with burglary and on April 26, of stealing groceries valued at $181.45 from Raeward Fresh supermarket on Marshland Rd, Christchurch.
She was remanded on bail without plea to July 5.
