Man accused of raping young girl loses name suppression

A 19-year-old accused of raping a young girl in an Auckland park has denied the charge as his name suppression lapsed this morning.

Alex Fausia appeared in Auckland District Court after an alleged sex attack in a Glen Innes Park on July 27.

He is accused of committing the sexual violation with "persons unknown" in Maybury Reserve but police have not yet arrested anyone else in connection with it.

Fausia pleaded not guilty and elected trial by jury today.

He was remanded on bail on a 24-hour curfew.

The defendant hobbled into the dock on crutches but was more mobile than his previous appearance when he was in a wheelchair.

His lawyer told the court he had contracted a serious infection in his leg during his initial remand in prison, which was likely to take months to heal.

Fausia, who was supported by a large family contingent, will be back before the court next month.
