Man accused of assaulting 2-month-old baby

A man has been arrested in Dunedin in relation to the serious assault of a 2-month-old baby.

The 30-year-old man's arrest followed a five-week-long investigation by the Dunedin police child protection team.

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court this afternoon on four charges including wounding causing grievous bodily harm.

The baby was admitted to Dunedin Hospital with multiple fractures to her limbs and a brain injury early last month.

It was initially feared the injuries were life-threatening.

The police child protection team was understood to have started closing in on possible suspects last week.

Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald told the Otago Daily Times last Wednesday that the injuries came to police attention on April 10 after the girl was admitted to hospital.

Police said at the time they could not comment on how the injuries were sustained because they were still investigating and it could prejudice any future court action.
