Major delays after Auckland Harbour Bridge crash

A man went for a "wade" in the Auckland Harbour to evade police this morning, after crashing his car on the Northern Motorway.

Emergency services were called to the incident, where a car had crashed into the Curran St on-ramp barrier, just before 6am.

Police spokesman Ben Offner said the man "had a slight wade or swim, but he came ashore quite quickly".

Mr Offner said police did not know why the driver tried to evade police.

"I'm sure there is a good reason for it, which I'm sure will come out in due course, but at this stage I don't know what it is."

The driver and three passengers have been taken to hospital, but none have major injuries.

Traffic is heavy across the Harbour Bridge into the city and congested southbound through Spaghetti Junction and on the Mt Wellington highway.
