Mahunga Golf Club Report
Saturday saw the qualifying round for the men's Walker Fourball, and some good scores were returned.
There was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard, with the pairings of Byron Karaitiana and Allan Biel, Kurt and Justin Karaitiana and Kevin Gibbs and Ken Downing all
finishing with best ball scores of 61 nett. Ray Cocks and Harley Biel finished on 62.
The club competition on the day was a medal round. In the first group, Justin Karaitiana led the way with a 67 nett, with Quentin Henderson the runner-up on 70 nett, and Byron Karaitiana a stroke further back. In the middle group, Paul Haxton took the first spot with a 70 nett, which was one ahead of Chris Paine and Ken Downing. The third group winner was Anton Coltham on a 71 nett, with Layton Kawana and Laurence Butler both finishing on 72.
The Makes Cents nearest to the pin on the first hole went to Nikaiya Graham, and the Mitre 10 on the third went to Quentin Henderson, with Bill Ousey taking the McAuley's Transport on the sixth, Justin Karaitiana the Pak'N Save Masterton on the eighth and the Alister Bruce Affordable Sheds on the 10th, and Harley Biel the Dinah and Deb Keats Professionals Real Estate on 17.
Holes in two were scored by Graeme Dick, Anton Coltham, Byron Karaitiana, Ken Downing, Shane Stewart, Anita Karaitiana, Justin Karaitiana and Quentin Henderson.
Sunday's weather meant only a small field played in the stableford round, which turned out to be an Ivan Karaitiana benefit, as he posted the best score of 42 points, with a round that was considerably better than the Saturday one. He also scored the only two holes in two for the day. Second place was shared by Steve Dick and Ian Grant with 35.
On Tuesday, the veteran's group played in a fourball competition. In the women's pairings, Nooroa Rota and Yvonne Allsworth had the best score of 59 nett, with Janet Campbell and Judith O'Connor on 60 nett, with Jocelyn Parker and Janet Shaw on 60. The men's foursomes went to Ray Loader and Phil Wellesley with a 58 nett, with Trevor Oliver and Ian Race on 58.
The women's nearest to the pins went to Nooroa Rota and Yvonne Allsworth on the third hole and Janet Campbell and Judith O'Connor on the sixth, while the men's went to Ray Stringfellow and Roger Stenton on the sixth hole and Peter Campbell and Blair Harvey on the seventh. Holes in two were scored by Peter Campbell and Blair Harvey and Trevor Oliver and Ian Race.
This Saturday the men play the first round of the Walker Fourball matches. The women will be playing the final of the Life Members Trophy on Saturday. The club competition for those not involved in matches will be a stableford round.
Sunday will see a number of the men off to Carterton to play in the Wairarapa Open Men's Foursomes Tournament. The club competition will be a medal round.
