A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck 40km south west of Wellington on Friday night.
The 25km deep quake was recorded at 10.22pm.
Almost 2000 people reported feeling a moderate shake to GeoNet.
There were no reports of damage.
Geonet said the moderate quake was causing light shaking near the capital.
