Magic moment for Masterton relay team

Masterton Shear Magic Masters Swimming Club had plenty to celebrate after its 30th anniversary carnival.

The feature event at Masterton's Genesis Recreation Centre Trust House pool was the the Shear Magic Sheep Dip 4x50m relay in which Wellington Harbour Capital were the defending champions.

But on this occasion it was Masterton's swimmers who made a huge impact in individual events, breaking numerous personal bests.

Their team clocked 2min 14.25s in the relay to head home Mana Marlins, 2.21.50, and Levin 2.22.68.

The "Shear Magic Sheep Dip Carnival" attracted 48 swimmers from clubs around the North Island including Wellington, Levin, Hawera, Feilding and Katikati with age groups from 25 to 70-plus.

Masterton Shear Magic was one of the first Masters swim clubs in New Zealand and has several long-standing members, notably Brian Bourke and Paul Maguire, who were instrumental in its formation and are still swimming with the club.

Coaching sessions are held each Friday from 6pm-7pm with swimmers over the age of 20 welcome.

Masterton Shear Magic swimmers will contest the Half Hour Swim at the Genesis Recreation Centre this Sunday from 8am and will then prepare for the Harbour Capital carnival at the Huia pool on September 22, and the North Island short course championships in Auckland in October.
