Lundy 'very happy' with decision

Mark Lundy has released a statement saying he is "very happy'' following the Privy Council's decision to quash his convictions for murdering his wife and daughter 13 years ago.

Lundy was convicted of murdering his wife Christine and daughter Amber in August 2000 and sentenced to a jail term of at least 20 years.

Lundy's sister Caryl Jones spoke to 3 News after visiting him in Rangipo Prison, where he is serving the sentence.

"He was absolutely elated, once we got over the tears,'' she said.

She also read a statement on Lundy's behalf.

"Thirteen years ago I believed in the truth, the police and the justice system. Today I believe in the truth and am very happy that the Privy Council could see it.''

Lundy's case was taken to the Privy Council and a three-day appeal hearing was held in June.

In its decision - released at 9pm last night - the Privy Council unanimously decided that Lundy's appeal should be allowed; that the convictions should be quashed; that Lundy should stand trial again on the charges of murder as soon as possible; and until then, and subject to any High Court decision on bail, Mr Lundy should remain in custody.

His lawyers have indicated they will apply for bail.
