Wairarapa had good reason to feel disappointed at their three-wicket loss to Taranaki in their Chapple Cup limited overs senior men's cricket match at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval in Masterton yesterday.
The home team looked to gave the game pretty much in the bag after amassing a healthy 265 in their
50 overs and having Taranaki struggling to maintain the required run rate leading into their last 10 overs but some loose bowling let the visitors off the hook and they won with two overs to spare.
The consistency of the Wairarapa batting was evidenced by the fact just two of their batsmen failed to get into double figures, and one of them, Joe Hull, didn't even get to face a ball.
It was Academy player Chad Yates who made the most impression, his 72 being a mixture of patience and controlled aggression.
Opener Brad Edwards adopted a similar philosophy as Yates in his 31 and there was some punishing stroke making from both Seth Rance (30) and Daniel Stonely (35) later in the order, Stoneley coming into the side as a replacement for Rathkeale College all-rounder Dean van Deventer, who was preparing to represent Central Districts at a national age group tournament.
Taranaki lost their first wicket with just three runs on the board but opener Broadmore (81) and first drip Ebrahim (62) quickly steadied the ship in a partnership which was to prove vital in the final analysis. Middle order players Tai (38) and Johnstone (39) were other major contributors in their team's success
The Wairarapa attack was generally sound in their line and length but clearly frustrated at several vociferous appeals for lbws and caught behinds being turned down they lost their way towards the end of the innings and allowed Taranaki to prosper at a time when restricting runs was crucial to their cause.
Yates completed a fine all-round performance by being the best of the Wairarapa bowlers as well, taking 2-38 from his nine overs and constantly troubling the batsmen with his control and variation.
Pacemen Rance and Hayden Spierling also picked up two wickets apiece.

On the club scene the Umpires Cup senior men's inter-club fixture between Greytown and Lansdowne resulted in an 87-run to Greytown.
T.Lucas (40), B.Lyford (44), T.Broughton (36) and M.Childs (24) were the leading scorers in Greytown's 235 although "Mr Extras" with 50 actually outstripped them all.
Lansdowne made 148 in reply with E.Burt's 5-35 the highlight of the Greytown bowling effort.
Wairarapa's representation in the Central Districts A side to play their Wellington counterparts at Queen Elizabeth Park Oval in Masterton from tomorrow through until Thursday has been doubled.
Opening batsman Sam Curtis was the only Wairarapa player originally named in the CD side but he has now been joined by pace bowler Seth Rance due to injury hassles.
