A friend of Tristan Hunter wrote in an online tribute: "My idol, my best friend, and my brother I can't believe you're not here any more. Thank you for a lifetime of the best memories, though they make it so much harder. I'll love you forever man."
A man who spoke with Mr Hunter before he was killed on a Kapiti Coast road, told him skating down the steep, narrow and winding road was "a crazy idea."
A Wellington Free Ambulance spokeswoman said an ambulance was called to the scene at 5.45pm, but the man died at the scene.
A witness, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had been dirt biking in the area and spoke with two men at the top of the road about 5pm.
"There was just two guys at the top [of the road] and three to stop traffic at the bottom.
"We had just stopped to strap the bikes down and they had just pulled up."
The witness said the two men were having something to eat and one said he was about to longboard down the hill.
"We said it was a crazy idea - go out and look at the road for yourself and you would understand."
He said they left just after 5pm, before the men began their descent.
"It's kind of lucky... we were going to stay and watch."
Central Police Communications shift manager Ken Climo said the death would be included in the official Easter road toll.
Kapiti Police and the Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
