The Masterton Host Waipoua Lions Club sponsored his bid at the contest and all contestants delivered a prepared and an impromptu speech.
Nathalie Shackleton, of Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt, won the regional competition, ahead of Abigail Sadler, from Gisborne Girl's High School. Logan Tubman-Wallis was another student who excelled at Chanel College, Mr Miles said, and who had for his efforts received a Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award.
"Logan was nominated for this award because he consistently demonstrates leadership qualities," Mr Miles said.
An example of his ability to lead, Mr Miles said, was his single-handed organisation of the making of Chanel College's entry in to the Air New Zealand movie-making contest to help celebrate the company anniversary.
"He brought other students on board, sourced the necessary materials and equipment, and made the movie, all in his own time. This involved time management and the management of human resources and is only one example of the projects he has involved himself in.
"Other students admire him and respect his opinions. In all his dealings with staff and students alike, Logan displays intelligence, modesty, the use of initiative and a great sense of integrity. These are all qualities which make him a natural leader and bode well for his future," Mr Miles said.
Sue Short from Westpac Bank presented the award on behalf of the Sir Peter Blake Trust.
