Wairarapa competitors featured prominently amongst the major placings in the 2009 edition of the Holdsworth Jumbo trail race, the 15th consecutive running of which was held at Mt Holdsworth on Saturday.
What is thought to be a record 42 Wairarapa athletes took part in
the event, which consisted of two races over
the longer 24km distance, one of which was held over the original course which had Powell Hut as part of the ascent and the second over the more recent course where Powell Hutt is part of the descent. Then there was the Hooper Loop over the shorter distance of 12km.
Wairarapa's Sarah Pettus was first in the open women's section over the 24km course which has been in vogue for the past four years in a time of 3mins 14mins 49secs with another local in Laura Rhymer filling the runners-up position in 3hrs 37mins 31secs.
Third in the veteran men's race was Terry Blackburn, also from Wairarapa, in 3hrs 4mins 11secs with the winner of that section, Glenn Muirhead of Wellington, actually returning the fastest time overall of 2hrs 43mins 56secs, well outside James Coubrough's race record of 2hrs 16mins 8secs.
Highlight for Wairarapa in the 24km race over the original course was the effort of Matt Harvey to win the open men's title in 2hrs 53mins 27secs, only some six minutes slower than the fastest competitor over that course, Colin Rolfe of Paraparaumu.
The McCrudden brothers from Manawatu dominated the Hooper Loop with Sean winning in 57mins 19secs and Martin coming third overall in 1hr 6mins.
