The man who was photographed with more than a dozen bicycles strapped to his car says he is more concerned about the man who took the photo while driving than his "secure and safe load".
Bruce O'Halloran's method of moving his bicycles raised a few eyebrows on Monday morning, especiallythose of Craig Stewart.
Mr Stewart sent the Herald a picture of the car going over Mangere Bridge, and since it was published, a number of readers have emailed in naming Mr O'Halloran, director of Adventure Cycles, as the driver.
Mr O'Halloran said the dozen or so bikes were attached to the car safely and securely with luggage straps.
"It was a large mass spread across two axles, less than the [maximum weight] for a passenger car designed to carry five adults, which is what it is ... . We were well off that."
Mr O'Halloran said the luggage straps went through the wheels of the bikes with some "additional sub-straps" which secured a centred bike in the stack.
"My concern is that we have people illegally using cellphones to take pictures of me taking my secure and safe load down the road."
Mr O'Halloran said he was moving the bikes from his shop in Pt Chevalier to a storage unit.
He said he didn't often transport that many bikes.
"But often enough to know what I'm doing."
Mr O'Halloran said he had been asked to sign a few copies of the photo after it was published last Thursday.
