When you look at yourself in the mirror you learn what you look like on the outside, but when you look at yourself on a white piece of paper you learn who you are on the inside, says Jonathan Milne, managing director of art school The Learning Connexion.
"The paper's
revelations come through the magic of drawing,'' he says. "It's partly about what you choose to do and how you choose to do it. It's also about the unfolding of a visual language that is different from words but just as powerful.
"There's a lot more to art than art. It's why The Learning Connexion calls its programme the diploma of art and creativity.
"For the past 17 years or so we've been building a programme in which the creative components of art are just as important as the technical elements. We set out to build a programme that has value far beyond the conventional limits of art.
"The blank sheet of paper certainly provides an opportunity to learn about drawing, but the bigger reward is a lesson about life.''
The next diploma course starts July 18, 2005. For details, see www.tlc.ac.nz or ph 0800 278 769.
