A Takanini school's commitment to helping cancer sufferers on Daffodil Day has become a legacy and an important part of the school grounds.
More than 1600 daffodils were picked yesterday by pupils of Conifer Grove Primary School for Daffodil Day, which symbolises the struggle of cancer victims.
The flowers weretaken to the National Bank in Papakura where they will be sold.
Conifer Grove principal Sue Andersen said Daffodil Day had become an important part of the school since bulbs were planted there in 1993.
"I think it's something the school will always continue with because the children have to look after them. It ties in with the things we are trying to teach like responsibility, respect and caring."
Ms Andersen said the daffodil was incorporated on the school's flag after a competition was held to design one six years ago.
She said a colder, wetter winter this year meant fewer early flowers.
"They haven't come through yet. We will still take them to the bank when they come up again, though."
