Leeches used to reattach ear after brutal bar brawl

Leeches have been used to help reattach an Auckland woman's ear after most of it was bitten off during a bar fight.

The Weekend Herald has learned that part of the victim's right ear was almost severed in the fight with another woman at a CBD bar last Sunday.

The fight took place at QF Tavern on Auckland's Queen St.

The victim did not want to speak publicly about her ordeal but it is understood she is recovering at home but still receiving treatment for her injury.

She was taken to Auckland City Hospital after the fight with a woman she knew at QF Tavern on Queen St at 1.30am.

It is understood the victim stepped in to stop a fight between the woman and someone else.

She was later transferred to Middlemore Hospital where doctors worked to reattach her ear. Part of that process included the use of leeches.

has chosen not to name, explained to her friends on Facebook why the creature was used.

"There's only a small amount of skin that was still connecting the lobe that the blood is trying to get through too fast and it's causing a big block up," she said. "They need the leeches to suck out the blood so blood goes through to the rest of my ear and [it] doesn't die. Never thought someone would bite a chunk out of my ear."

Detective Sergeant Nicole Miller said police were not advised of the incident on the night. They only became aware of it when the victim made a complaint.
