Lee confident about trains

Auckland Regional Council chairman Mike Lee is looking forward to the purchase of electric trains after legislation providing for special road-fuel taxes for public transport projects won majority support for a second reading in Parliament yesterday.

The council has approved a contingency budget for next year without provision for rail electrification, but Mr Lee said support yesterday for the Land Transport Management Amendment Bill left him confident the legislation would be passed.
