CANBERRA- France's 12 Catalans players will form the core of a side that see themselves as genuine semifinal prospects ahead of the Tricolores' opening World Cup rugby league match against Scotland tomorrow.
Five-eighth Thomas Bosc is one of those players and the Super League star today told everyonehe was ready for the challenge.
"We've got a lot of players from the Super League. We've had good preparation ... we are very excited for the game tomorrow," Bosc said.
He was talking after the French had finished a training run on a superb looking Canberra Stadium surface.
Coach John Monie said the squad had a relaxing week in the national capital and had gelled well considering players from France's domestic competition were well into their off-season.
"They're doing too much talking like the French always want to do but they trained well this morning," Monie said.
"This is our third year together, for most of them, and the Catalans guys finished the Super League in third place so their form is good coming into the game and most of their players are in the team."
Monie said he had tried to keep the lid on any expectations the French would easily account for their Scottish opponents and waltz into the playoffs with a second victory against the other Pool 2 nation, Fiji.
"That's something that we haven't talked about. I've learnt in the past you never underestimate your opposition."
The French would do well to pay more than passing respect to the Bravehearts who have called upon a string of solid NRL players including Manly's grand final hat-trick whiz Michael Robertson.
Bustling Canberra Raiders prop Scott Logan won't hurt Scotland's cause nor will Bulldogs forward Chris Armit.
The Scots will be led by Super League journeyman and halfback Danny Brough.
Despite attempting to downplay French chances, Monie offered a subtle warning that there was plenty of attacking flare amongst his side.
"We've practised a style where once they get into good attacking positions I don't mind what they do, they can have a bit of a go at whatever they like," said Monie.
