Late night fire at Taranaki takeaways under investigation

Fire investigators will today work out how a blaze started in a Taranaki fish and chip shop overnight.

Fire Service central shift manager David Meikle said Yummy's Takeaways on Broadway in Stratford was "well alight" when the alarm was raised by a passing police patrol.

Flames were seen coming from the shop at 10.52pm.

He said specialist investigators would be returning to the damaged takeaway bar and determine what caused the fire to start.

Meikle said it took a couple of hours to extinguish the blaze.

At its height eight fire crews and a command unit from New Plymouth were at the scene.

No one was hurt in the fire.
