Police were not able to comment at this stage on the likely cause of the crash.
Captain Jamieson, 58, became the marine manager of port operations and principal harbourmaster at the Gisborne port in 2006.
He was the senior maritime adviser for the area north of Mahia to Hicks Bay.
Captain Jamieson went to sea in his teens and worked on a wide variety of ships around the world during his career.
"Charlie has been our marine manager, pilot and harbourmaster for eight years and his contribution over that period of time has been incredibly valuable," said Eastland Port general manager Andrew Gaddum.
"Over and above his role as a senior manager within the company, he was a thoroughly decent bloke.
"Charlie was someone with an infectious laugh and love of life," Mr Gaddum said.
"He was just an absolute all-round good guy and his passing leaves a massive hole in the organisation -- and also in our hearts.
"Our condolences go out to his wife and family."
Captain Jamieson is survived by his wife Kathy, their children and grand children.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday.
