Lake Taupo erosion queried

The Taupo District Council is investigating whether it can force a power company to pay for costly erosion damage occurring along Lake Taupo's foreshore.

Mighty River Power controls the lake level and has an agreement with the council to pay for any damage directly caused by its activities.

Council officers have been asked to check the company's official lake level measurements amid concerns that last summer's high levels have caused lake shore erosion at Motutere and Kuratau.

Councillor Don Ormsby said $175,000 had been budgeted for repairs over the next few years.
