Kuranui College fifth former Emma Wills is looking forward to making her debut for Wellington in the Booth Shield junior inter-provincial golf tournament at Stratford over Labour weekend.
The 13-handicapper from the Carterton Golf Club has been involved in the sport for just four years and sees this latest opportunity as
a chance to further her experience in the game.
"It'll be a big challenge but I'm not too nervous. I just want to get out there and play," she said today.
If practice does indeed make perfect then Wills, 15, should excel. She has been practising at Carterton over the past few weeks on almost a daily basis and is "pretty happy" with all aspects of her game.
Her final dress rehearsal for the Booth Shield came when she played off in the final of the Carterton match play championship against the experienced Lyn Andrews.
By her own admission Wills had her ups and downs but her fighting qualities were illustrated by the match not being decided in Andrew's favour until the very last of the scheduled 36 holes.
Another pleasing result for Wills this year was the winning of the junior section of the Wainuiomata Open.
A long term ambition for the talented youngster is to be a professional golfer but before that she is determined to keep reducing her handicap and to make a name for herself among her New Zealand peers.
