A New Zealand girl believed to have been on the island of Utoeya when a man shot dead more than 80 people yesterday is still missing.
The unnamed girl's mother was in Norway and was desperate for news.
Confirmation that a Kiwi may have been in the middle of the
carnage came from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials.
They said she had dual New Zealand-Norwegian nationality.
MFAT said there had been no update overnight as to the girl's whereabouts, and they weren't expecting any further update today.
The New Zealand ambassador at The Hague, which is accredited to Norway, George Troup, said: "The mother is waiting for news and is very apprehensive."
Troup said the girl had relatives in New Zealand and they rightly had been informed last night.
He did not know the whereabouts of the girl's father and had only been liaising with her mother.
"Our people are in contact with those who need to be informed. I'm not at liberty to give any further information."
Acting Prime Minister Bill English said last night he had been briefed by officials and he knew nothing more than had been told to the media.
"It will be very distressing time for the family and, if it is the case that a young person has been going about a peaceful business and has been caught up in this, it is certainly horrific. We can just wait and see."
Police in Norway will turn to a mini-submarine to help in the search for more bodies of victims from the shooting massacre on an island near Oslo that claimed at least 85 lives.
"Tonight a mini-submarine will be sent and go through the whole night" looking for bodies around Utoeya island, police spokesman Dag Gjaerum told AFP.
