A Kiwi fishing show host is calling for a nationwide beach clean-up day, saying the ocean is "screaming out for help".
Host of ADOS Addicting to Fishing Nicky Sinden went for a walk at her local beach in Mangawhai this morning and was horrified to discover bits of plasticand rubbish carpeting the shore.
What looked at first like pieces of shell were actually pieces of tiny plastic.
Sinden decided to hold a clean-up at the beach on Sunday at 8am, but encouraged everyone to head down to their own local beach on Sunday morning, clean up some rubbish, and post a photo to her Facebook page.

"I hate to point out the obvious but this is a real issue of ours. The ocean belongs to all of us and what we found this morning is only a minute snapshot into this very real and very large problem.

"We are the ocean's caretakers. We have technology to wash our cars for us, and wash dishes, where is the technology to wash our beaches?
"This ocean of ours is linked to everything. Our weather systems, it's the animals' homes, it's an ecosystem within itself, it's our food source and it is screaming out for help."
Sinden said fish and other marine life expected that anything sitting on the bottom of the ocean was a food source.
"They just open their mouths at everything, sucking it in assuming it's food. Their bodies cannot process plastic and rubbish so they die."
She asked for people to join her down at Mangawhai Heads Beach this weekend with a bucket or bag to collect rubbish in.

"If you are in other parts of NZ, we encourage you to still participate by going to your local beach and picking up any big or small pieces of plastic that you find.
"We pick up our natural, biodegradable dog poo from the beach and we put it in the bin, how about next time we go to the beach we all pick up some plastic too."
