Kiwi chick island-bound

Predator-free Matakohe (Limestone) Island in Whangarei Harbour will today become a temporary home for a 23-day-old kiwi chick called Kiri.

Kiri is the first kiwi hatched from the Whangarei Heads Landcare Forum's Operation Nest Egg project and will join 20 other kiwi on the island.

The chick's transfer is the first success story in the community-driven project, which represents private landowners who want to save the kiwi population on their land.
