Kiwi charged after Washington DC embassy incident

A Kiwi has been criminally charged following an alleged incident at New Zealand's embassy in Washington DC.

The person was charged with intentionally attempting to make an intimate visual recording of another person at the diplomatic building in the American capital between July 26 and July 28 last year.

Appearing in the Auckland District Court yesterday for the first time, the person was granted interim name suppression before being remanded on bail.

They will appear in court again later this month.

In response to requests for information from the Herald both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other government ministries directed questions to police.

Police confirmed a person has been charged in relation to "an off-shore matter".

The case is being heard in New Zealand and not the United States because the alleged incident occurred inside the embassy which is deemed part of a sovereign state - in this case New Zealand.

The New Zealand embassy is located in an area of Washington called Embassy Row, where many countries have diplomatic outposts and attaches stationed.

New Zealand's current Ambassador to the United States is Tim Groser.
