Kia is going turbo. The Korean brand is to unveil its first turbocharged petrol-powered car in New Zealand soon. Called the Kia Cerato Koup, it will be the first of several turbocharged power units to be released in the near future.
The Cerato Koup will have the firm's new 1.6-litre
T-GDI (turbocharged petrol direct injection) Gamma four-cylinder petrol engine, which will produce 150kW and 265Nm of torque.
Kia also has three other T-GDI petrol engines in development. A 90kW 1.0-litre three cylinder and a 1.25-litre four cylinder Kappa engine are in the Picanto range and Kia claim performance will be as good as the equivalent naturally aspirated 1.8-litre petrol engines.
The Optima is to get a 2-litre T-GDI four cylinder engine, expected to deliver 183kW.
Kia is using its research and development resources to drive its focus on developing turbo technology in its road cars.
