An Australian man who occupied a kauri tree in West Auckland in 2015 has been denied New Zealand citizenship because of his trespass conviction.
The tree is still standing but its fate is before the High Court.
Michael Tavares spent nearly four days up the tree in Titirangi in order
to save it.
He said he was disappointed with the decision.
Tavares said Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne has the ability to approve applications if the conviction is out-of-the-ordinary, abnormal or rare.
