A 4-2 win might seem comfortable enough but Wairarapa United didn't have it all their own way in their Central League football match with Wellington United on Saturday.
It was Wellington United who made most of the play inside the first 20 minutes and it took some brilliant goalkeepingby Matt Borren and tight defensive work by Carl Shailer, Nathan Cooksley, Adam Cowan and Dale Higham to keep the home side in bay.
It was noticeable, however, once Wairarapa United's started to flow and they scored the opening goal through player of the day Brian Kalteck, the Wellington United heads dropped to a degree.
Wairarapa United were quick to capitalise. Kalteck scored a second goal and others to Alssney Cissoko and Aaron Speirling had them home and hosed at 4-1 before Wellington United scored right on fulltime to reduce the margin to two.
Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley was pleased with several positives, the biggest being the versatility of Vanuatu international Kalteck who was tried at fullback and striker. He looked a class act in both roles.
Chanel College student Chris Cox had ample game time at fullback and looked at ease at the higher level. Spierling and Seule Soromon often combined effectively in attacking forays.
Wairarapa are awaiting the result of the appeal against their disqualification from the Chatham Cup for playing an ineligible player in their 2-1 third-round victory over Napier City Rovers. Football New Zealand will make an announcement tomorrow.
