The Governor-General job has been offered to former Ombudsman Anand Satyanand, NZPA has reported.
Dame Silvia Cartwright's replacement is likely to be made soon but Prime Minister Helen Clark's office said they could not yet give a date.
Last year Helen Clark said the announcement would be made early this
year, possibly as late as April.
Dame Silvia's five-year term was extended by four months, taking it to August, because the selection process would have clashed with last year's election if her term had ended in April.
Judge Satyanand retired last February as Ombudsman. He previously served another five year term in the role.
Should Judge Satyanand, of Indo-Fijian parentage, accept the job he would be the first New Zealand Governor-General of Asian ethnicity.
