John dory population explosion annoys fishermen

Nelson commercial fishermen are continuing to suffer problems from what they describe as a john dory population explosion.

In December, recreational anglers were called upon to help cut soaring stocks of the species because commercial fishermen were regularly exceeding their quota.

Nelson fishermen are seeking an increase to the quota for the species in the Challenger fishing area. It has stood at 90 tonnes since 1986. Quota breaches attract a deemed value penalty from the Government.

Challenger Finfisheries Management Company chief executive Russell Mincher said quota changes were unlikely to happen before next year.
