A Japanese student is dead after the car he was in crashed on the Pahiatua Track, near Palmerston North last night.
Two other people were in the vehicle, but escaped from minor injuries after the accident near the summit on the Palmerston North side, about 11.10pm.

Simon Mercer told NZPA it appeared the car had not taken a corner and hit a bank and rolled.
It was taking a while to track down the student's next of kin, Mr Mercer said.
